Greetings from What is California? HQ in beautiful Sacramento. I’ve got some bittersweet news to deliver, so I’ll just get to it: What is California? is taking an indefinite break.
I’ve loved producing and packaging the shows for you, dear listener, and I’ve loved sharing new episodes featuring such distinguished Californians as Governor Jerry Brown, Karina Longworth, Baratunde Thurston, Congresswoman Jackie Speier and the other 30-plus guests who’ve appeared since the show launched last year. I’ve loved writing and distributing “Weekend Links” to cool California stories every Friday. I’ve loved your feedback and the new listeners and the growth.
However, some big personal and professional changes loom for me. Some of those changes are already happening, and by all indications 2023 will look a lot different for me than 2022 has been.
So: Three seasons is enough. I might drop back in for a mini-season here or there—especially if you are a person with money who may want to sponsor one. (Hint hint.) If so, please drop me a line at hello@whatiscalifornia.com.
And even if you just want to drop me a line to say what the show has meant to you since you started listening, I’d love to hear from you. In addition to the great guests, it’s listeners like you, as they say, who have made this project so fun and rewarding.
I’m keeping everything live for now: The episode feed, the website, the Substack… Maybe I’ll fire it up for fun, wherever 2023 takes me. You never know.
In any case, thank you for listening, reading and/or sharing. Thank you for joining me on this journey—whether you’re a 39-episode completist or just a dabbler. I’m grateful for you. May you continue to explore this weird and wonderful state in the year and years ahead. I hope to catch you again somewhere along the way.
Until then, remember, as always, keep your eye on the bear. 🐻 ❤️
